Dr Andrea Jacobs

Dr Andrea Jacobs is a specialist anaesthesiologist, MBA graduate from Stellenbosch University Business School, and founder of Vision Intelligence Consulting.

She has served as Co-Chairperson of the SASA Private Practice Business Unit, and serves on the SAMA Specialist Practice Committee, contributing to CPT coding matters for medical practitioners across South Africa. She brings governance-level expertise from years of leading clinical and operational processes across hospital groups.

She knows both sides of healthcare — the bedside and the boardroom. Built from experience. Driven by purpose.

HPCSA Booklet 16 — What Doctors Must Know

The rules that govern your online presence

The HPCSA regulates how healthcare practitioners use social media. Every post, every comment, every review carries professional consequences. Here's what you need to know.

Patient Confidentiality & Privacy

You must obtain written consent before publishing any patient information or photographs — even if you believe the patient cannot be identified. This obligation continues after the patient's death.

No Medical Advice Over Social Media

Except in emergencies, do not provide health advice to individuals you don't have a practitioner-patient relationship with. If a patient seeks advice online, direct them to book an in-person appointment.

No Touting or Canvassing

You may not claim to be "the best doctor" or make guarantees of outcomes. You may not promote your practice through superiority claims over colleagues. This includes patient reviews that make such claims on your behalf.

Separate Personal and Professional Accounts

Maintain separate accounts for personal and professional use. Your personal activity can still bring the profession into disrepute — anonymity on social media is never guaranteed.

No Photographs During Surgery or Patient Care

Taking photographs during surgery or any form of patient care for social media purposes is explicitly prohibited under HPCSA guidelines.

Conflicts of Interest Must Be Declared

If you have a financial interest in any hospital, medicine, or health-related product you promote — even via personal blogs — you must declare it in accordance with HPCSA rules.

Always Include a Disclaimer

Your profile should state that views are your own and do not represent your profession or health establishment. Note: this does not exempt you from the above rules.
